ecofriendly bug repellant

any of you guys find a sensible product to keep the spiders/wasps muddaubbers away? that spider poo is a pain.... and while im a pretty clean dude, those darn mud daubers are just insidious and the mess they leave if the 'hut' gets wet is just filthy. The wasps generally leave me alone, but i did get one bite this year...it was so yucky i thought i had gotten bitten by a brown recluse! I had to basically dig a whole in my arm to get it out.

do you use any product in the cabin? if so, is it diff the topside? you do the edge of the dock?

for flies this little doodad is pretty cool and it really works!

Decoy nests work well for many types of wasp.

Spider poo? Really? I like spiders around, but they make my mom crazy and she gets horror-movie amounts of them living under the canopy on their boat lift when she does nothing, but when she sprays around this "spider repellent" spray she has then there are zero. I don't know the brand or how environmentally sound it is, but it sure seems to work.

The very best ecofriendly bug repellent I've found is called "Crocodile". It's an herbal lotion that works incredibly well.

Here is the manufacturers website:
Dancing Roots

And here is a review of the product:
Crocodile! Insect Repellent

And just to be clear, I have absolutely NO affiliation or connection to this product or the company that makes it. I simply really like this bug repellent and I find that it works incredibly well.

I have recently heard that spraying listerine mouthwash, (any flavor is alleged to work), is supposed to be a good insect repellant. It is certainly worth a try.

Mehhhh.... I dunno. The reason this might work at all is because the active ingredient in Listerine is eucalyptol, derived from eucalyptus oil, and it is well known that Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is a very good organic repellent. But the concentrations in Listerine are vanishingly small, well under 1/10 of 1%, while effective repellents contain 40% to 50% essential oil.

It seems that the likelihood of listerine just sprayed around on surfaces having much effect is pretty small, but if you try it I'd be really interested to hear the results. A good experiment would be to mark off 3 1-meter squares in an area where you usually get critters living and spray the Listerine in one, nothing in another and OLE in a third, then count the populations over time.

Starbrite and others actually do make spider repellant. Or, you can keep toads and geckos on the boat. :-)

Back to the original subject....I have some spray called Cactus Juice that works very well on mosquitos.

Active ingredient is Dimethicone
