outboard Motor Mount

I just bought my first boat, an Oday Mariner (20''). It did not come with an outboard, but I already have a 5hp that I would like to use with it. I can put the motor right on the transom edge without using a motor mount, but shouldn''t I get a motor mount anyway? I am also incredibly nervous about drilling into my boat to put on the mount. Is this a job I could research and do myself or should I have someone experienced do it so I don''t mess up anything? Any suggestions, information, or how to would be appreciated.

I think I recall that the transom of the Oday Mariner is designed to directly accept the OB. My brother had one many years ago and can''t remember for sure.

I would prefer a direct mount without a bracket if you can be sure of getting prop in the water. Also, check that the rudder will clear the OB - lock to lock. A direct mount gets you closer to the vessel centerline, thus reducing the tendency to cavitate in chop. Also, it puts less flexure in the transom than a bracket mount.

Also, check to see that everything works, rudder, mainsheet, etc, when the motor is in the up position and the foot clears completely out of the water.

Although, installing a bracket requires few mechanical talents, choosing the bracket and assuring yourself the transom mounting point is sufficiently stout requires some research and expertise. Checking out other Mariners might be advisable.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am seeing what nice people "boat" people tend to be. It is a short shaft motor, but the prop does go under the water line. I am going to try it first without a motor mount. Now without the motor mount should I put some metal plating or something on either side of the transom where the motor will be? If so, could I just use an adhesive to attach it? I was thinking to do this so I don''t scratch up the fiberglass.

One problem common with outboard installations on sailboats is the motor coming out of the water as the boat pitches up and down. When the motor comes out of the water, the prop has no load and the motor overspeeds badly.

This is why people want long shaft motors for sailboats. I know it is hard not to use something you already have, but unless you sail on calm water, you will likely have problems with your short shaft outboard for the above reason.
