I am thinking about changing the color of my teak rails. Has anyone tried staining teak? I found one teak dealer who states that no matter what color you stain your teak it will always turn greyish after a while.

Anyway I have some teak on my boat that is exposed to the elements (Don''t we all) Many sailors like that grayish look that teak weathers to, I am just not one of them. I like the look of deep dark stained wood. For this I use Cetol By Sikkens. It is a once a season application and makes my wood glow. You''ll have to do it once a year but that is nothing compaired to teak oil once a week.
Prelude has a 28 year old teak deck cap and I have been using a product called Tip Top Teak sealer. It requires that you remove the old discolored teak oil with a good teak cleaner. I usually go over the work twice. After the teak dries I apply two brush coats of the Tip Top Teak sealer and get a good looking finish that lasts 2 to 3 months in Florida in the winter and 1 to 2 months in the summer. The deck cap is about 80 feet by 3 inches and the job will take about 1.5 hours to clean the teak and 1 hour to seal it with the new coating, not counting drying time .
Yes, you can stain teak. After you stain it you will need to apply some type of finish to the teak. The type of finish, if you start that discussion, watch out.
