Composting Toilets
 

Just in the process of purchasing a used sailboat which does not have a holding tank.
We are considering installing a composting toilet, Airhead or Natureshead.
Has anyone had any experiences with composting heads, any advise ,suggestions etc.
Much appreciated.:)

We have a Natureshead no major problems liveaboard so need to empty once a month, pee bottle every 2-3 days.
Have increase the edge with silicone near the solids trap door due to liquid flow wetting solids.
Great product, if thinking about going cheap there is a bucket system which seperate liquids and solids you buy the seperator and build the rest (look up ecovita privy kit).

It seems like the people who don't own one will tell you all the the things wrong with them. Yet the people that actually own one seem to be pretty happy with them.

I would agree with that general statement. I have found resistance with most of the traditionalists on my dock to any product with less than 15 years exposure to the market.

I am on the lunatic progressive fringe with my composting head and rocna anchor.....but am confident these were "the way to go" for my purposes.

We liveaboard with our nature's head. 2 thumbs up! We use dry coconut peat. Works great and its renewable unlike peat moss.

Second season with a Nature's Head. Not 100% perfect, but the issues are very easy to deal with. I'm happy with it.

I've already weighed in on the "other" compost toilet thread here, but I'll cast my vote again here ...

installed a Nature's Head in the spring before launching. Used it all summer (two weeks continuous with two people onboard and me mostly live-aboard weekends).

I wouldn't revert to a standard holding tank / marine setup if someone were to give it to me and install it for free ... just my personal 2 cents ...

This will be my third season with and AirHead and I also would never go back to a holding tank horror. The only problem is I have to be careful about ripe bananas. They bring fruit flies and and when the bananas are no longer there the flies head for the head. I'm making a little locker for bananas with a fine mesh to keep the little critters locked up and that should take care of the problem.
