Most of the world calls it the masthead light even though it isn't usually at the head of the mast. On power boats and ships it is mounted at the top of whatever mast or mast-like structure there is on the boat or ship. As noted earlier Americans generally call it the steaming light on sailboats, but you will still find it called a masthead light in many regulations.
