Seal packing material.

My old man was telling me about a seal packing material he used to use in the boat yards that they called "Monkey ****", supposedly has a play-dough like consistency, is capable of keeping a water tight seal, and is later removable without too much hastle. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find this material and what it's formally called, I've been searching and found some references to it in nautical books, but I've been able to locate an actual product.

Chances are very likely that the monkey**** will score the shaft far more quickly than using GFO or a proper flax packing material.
