mainsheet mysteries revealed?
 
I see multi purchase mainsheet controls on lots of catalina 30s and a few other boats.

Who would have some line drawings of various types?


Take this line.. now run from...fiddle block, a.. to fid b.. to block c... to block d.. to block e... :rolleyes: to block g.. oops f!... to g.. :rolleyes: down boom to turning block... to deck organizer.... through eyelet... to rope clutch... ::rolleyes:

If you changed the block on the traveler car to a triple block with becket and cam cleat, like the one shown in the following image, you could use it and have a 6:1 mainsheet on your boat. :D

Denise, if you need to be able to dump the main quickly in gusts, that system isn't going to help you. :)

You need something more like this:

Which I'm sure would be just a couple of blocks on the end of what you have now..

Just curious, how does this 6:1/24:1 dump the main more quickly than a 6:1???:confused: :rolleyes: :confused:

IIRC, Denise's current setup is a 4:1... which I believe she mentioned in a previous thread.

SD, I said "something more like this". The 4:1 coarse/fine set-up on the Harken web site is a mess and difficult to follow, so I posted something closer to what I had in mind. It's the PRINCIPLE we're talking about here!... Double-ended mainsheet, tackle on one end.. Silly Puppy! ;)

If the 4:1 is too slow, she could probably trial a 2:1 coarse with a 6:1 fine adjustment, but with no pics of the current set-up it's a bit difficult to call. This might seem extreme at first (using the 'fine' adjustment for normal non-gusty mainsheet control), but you do get used to it - eventually..

Makes gybing quicker too! :D


Denise, I'm sure you'd be able to modify what you've got - it shouldn't be too expensive. :)

I am not a fan of double or triple blocks on any sheet as I think they cause the line to twist and get quite squirrelly. I would use 'fiddle blocks' instead as the line seems to travel through them more smoothly without binding or twisting. They are also more expensive.
I like the idea of the extra means to let the main out with another lower powered block and tackle though. Thanks for that Hartley18.

I'd save my money to upgrade to 'fiddle blocks' instead of 'double blocks' on my main sheet at 4:1 before I did anything else (if you haven't already).

I only use Defender to link the type of blocks because it is convenient and not because I have any affiliation with them and the pictures help describe the discussion.
