So I was poking around Sailboat Listings and found an O'Day 25 that has an "inoperable OMC Saildrive". So, the question is, what are we talking, in general terms, to resolve that issue? Of course it could be something minor to a full swap out. Anyone have experience with maintaining these?
I wouldn't fully dismiss the potential without first finding out more about the specific issue. Those of us that have saildrives are generally quite pleased with them. They are simple machines and completely do away with prop walk when in reverse. Getting into my slip at the Club requires me to back up around a corner and then around a boat in front of mine on the dock. I do it without any difficulty. I would challenge any boat without a saildrive to do that without routinely swaping paint with the other boats in the area.
The OMC saildrives have a pretty lousy reputation for a reason, and if it is having a problem, running is really the best option.
