Anyone know what the life span is for a raw water cooled volvo md2b engine?

Mine is over 20 years and runs great, although I flush it with fresh water after every use.

How do you go about flushing it with fresh? Also, how steady should the exhaust water be? Is there a specific volume? If it falls below a certain level does that indicate an impeller needs replacing?

sneuman,

I have a 5gal. tank that I keep filled with fresh water with a intake line running to a 3/4" two way valve that can select from either seawater or the tank. This has worked fine with no problems. Even the thermostat stays clean. I have a good size raw water strainer installed right after the seacock. I still replace the waterpump impeller and seals every year. The flow out the exh. should be constant, with a gush of water every 3 seconds or so.

that sounds like a good arrangement. btw, how much water should i see dumping out of the exhaust outlet. Now I''m getting cyclical spurts, but I think perhaps it should me more: if so, should i assume that''s a bad empeller?

My MD2B is 33 years old. When I first started running it, I was wondering why so little exhaust water. The intake is only 5/8", so how much can you really build up? It''s been fine for years with just a little cyclical spray - spurt. I replace the impeller annually, but the problems is often finding the paper gasket necessary for the pump cover. KW

My experience with the MD-2 was that I should be able to touch the exhaust water with my bare hands without it burning. It might be hot but not steaming or scalding. One or two spurts every 3-4 secs or so. If your temp gauge is about 155-165 for rwc you''re probably OK.
