Jiffy reefing

Can anyone tell me what jiffy reefing is? Is it better or worse than hanking on a sail with snap hooks? Thanks

Not related other than both deal with sails. Jiffy reefing is system of lines and blocks for shortening the main when the wind picks up. Hanks are used for connecting the head sail to the forestay. You may mean what is the differnce between a furling head sail and one that is hanked on.

Stan has it right but you may be more familiar with the term ''slab reefing'' which is synonimous with the term ''Jiffy reefing'' which by either name is the simpliest and more reliable form of mainsail reefing. It has nothing to do with the jib.

I guess I''m confused. I''ve been looking at a Catalina 27 that the broker said has jiffy reefing. She explains it that the jib connects to the forestay by some kind of a track system as opposed to hanking on the sail.

Get another broker!

She''s talking about a headfoil type system for attaching a headsail to the forestay.

Jiffy reefing is a method of reducing the mainsail area by hauling in on one line to pull the tack and clew of the mainsail to a new position while you ease the halyard to let the sail down the mast.

Before you cut her loose, have some fun. Tell her you were wondering if the previous owner had done the normal periodic maintenance on his Beasel Clamps, and where did he store the Prop Wash?

Agree that you need to get another a broker. But some self education first. There are a lot of good books dealing on the various designs and what YOU need and want in a boat. A Catalina 27 is not a bad choice for your FIRST boat but she may not be the best boat for YOU. Hope this helps you find fair winds
