leaking gas tanks

I think I have overfilled my gas tank and thant is what is causing the leaking from the top of the tank. How do i know if the tank is leaking and that is not just overfill. Any suggestions on how to investigate this problem or what to do.

I''ve been there.

Is it also possible that you have a fuel line leak? If you can inspect the fuel line and assure yourself that it''s ok then the leak must be in the tank.

I would siphon the fuel down to what you think would be about half tank and observe if the leak persists. If it does, you must have a leak below the half-way mark.

If there is no leak and you add the fuel back into the tank a quart at a time and watch for leaks you might discover a leak above the half tank line. If no leaks show up, the problem must have been over fill.

Is this a portable tank, or mounted? If it is mounted, I would guess you have a filler cap that is not vented and it should not leak under any circumstances. If mounted, check your vent hose and vent as well for leaks.

Another thought: If you have to pump gas our of your tank be sure to use a pump designed specifically for this purpose. The wrong pump can spark from frictionl.
