Question Hurth 50 wb-whatever tranny questions

hello, I have a leaking tranny that shifts fine. When I got it, it was full of water. Now I flushed it about 20 times and still the fluid was dirty but have been using it anyway and aside from the leaks (1/2 of .33 qts per 20hrs and getting worse) it does fine.

My question is this, I intend to get a rebuild kit with new clutch plates and new seals....the tranny has about 500 hours on it total it is in a catalina 30 with an m-25 engine. I am very mechanically inclined and do not fear opening the wee little thing up BUT if there are any out there in sailnet land who have BTDT then please let me know if there are any tricks or treats I should look out for and/or any additional parts I should order while I am in there....

thank you

Josh

I had a Hurth 50 in a 270 with an 18 HP Perkins, it had 400 hrs. and I put another 600 hrs. without a problem. There is considerable controversy about rebuilding versus replacement with newer 100 series trans. The 50 is very sensitive in regard to the shims used. Some have apparently come from the factory in a "self-destruct" mode.
Your leak is alarming to say the least, was the boat flooded and if not how did the trans get full of water?

I once inquired of a Hurth dealer/serviceman about having our Hurth V150 rebuilt, it was a bit noisy at low revs (now I think they all are) and he said essentially "run it until it fails", then replace it.

Not a great strategy if it fails in a really remote place, though...

It would drive me nuts to have a leak that bad.. that's probably just seals of course but I don't know if you can change the seals without disrupting everything else....

Hi Capt. Traditional sunk on land scenario. My engine is a rebuild (round 2) from a place called country sales and service in ohio some where BTW not recommended but hey thats me...stiffed me on a bad engine), also known as a Kubota d950 and it too is leaking so the whole assembly will get pulled by me for a reseal and check.
