Need ideas for a new compression post

Hello!

I have a compression post in my Catalina 30 that is pretty badly stained towards the bottom of it. I tried refinishing it but it still looks pretty bad. I could paint it but.. I'd really like to replace it with something new.

Has anyone else replaced theirs? If so, what did you use?

Thanks!

Have you thought about whipping it ? If its only the base of the thing that is stained you could come up a foot or so, cover the stain and end up with a nice look.

edit...forget that...not really knowing the Catalina 30 I was figuring your CP was a pole...it's not is it ?

If it is stained could it be rotten near the bottom? Or is it just stained?

It's not badly rotten. It was being held together with long drywall screws and the wood around them was a little rotten. It definitely has to be replaced though.

I was thinking of maybe getting some kind or decorative wood post...but don't know where I would start looking for one. Another thought was to get a metal shop to remake it in stainless...but stainless wouldn't really match anything on the interior. hmm...

Isn't your compression post also the cornerpost of the head, with the door attached to it? If so I don't think stainless would work. Pretty expensive as well.
I'd use wood, laminated to the proper thickness.
Also look at the strengthening under the cabin sole to check for corrosion.

One of the C-30's issues is rot in the block between the floor and hull under the compression post. If your post is showing rot above the floor, it's probably pretty ugly underneath, too. Catalina has a fix on their web site, or check the Catalina 30 owner's forum on Yahoo.

The post itself is four teak planks approximately 1" x 4" formed into a box. It should be fairly straightforward to splice in new teak as needed, or re-make the whole thing out of a good domestic hardwood.

Oh cool..Thanks for the info! I'm gonna try and see how bad it is right now.

Here's a pic of the stained/rotted post. And here's two more of the boat after I gutted the interior today.

Yeah, it is the cornerpost of the head. You're right stainless would be a pain in the butt.

I'm gonna check for the corrosion now. Thanks!

P.S. I was in BC a lot last fall and I'm missing it. It's gorgeous up there.

Pics sure show how easy it is to remove bulkheads in a Catalina! Lots of liner in there.
