Beneteau 1st 38 - Interior liner sagging

Hi,

I have a Beneteau 1st 38 which I love but have a bit of a problem with the interior liner. It is sagging and falling away from the hull and ceiling. I was thinking that if I removed the foam off the hull and the liner that I could reattach it again. Does anyone have any suggestions on a product that I should use to remove the foam and one to use to reattach it or any other ideas to help?

Thanks,
SunGypsy

Let me put is simply and easily as I can. Time to start anew! Everyone I know of with French or other models with a foam backed vinyl from the 80's, seem to be replacing the liner. HERE is an article I did online at the Jeanneau owners site of my 85 Arcadia, with a link at the bottom to the heads area too. The whole boat has been redone.

I am recalling another post or two here of how some folks have attacked this issue, along with another sailing forum where a person did a first 310? might be a F305.........I have not seen the complete redo, but there was a post with general how they were attacking the issue.

Good luck
Marty

Marty's link above provides some good information on replacement. That may not yet be necessary, however, depending upon the area you are having problems with. When the foam backed headliner in our forward cabin began to fail, I effected a "temporary" fix (6 years ago) by ripping down some teak strips to 1" x 1/2" and cutting them to length to fit the overhead in the cabin, secured in place with countersunk #6 screws. (They can be seen in the snap-shot appearing in the follwing link.) Except for the time required to varnish them it was a quick'n dirty fix but it works well and looks reasonably decent.

The snapshot is from a discussion at Fixing Headliner with Screws and Washers - Page 2 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Beneteau has published a couple of files on repairs. They are too large to post but if you PM me with your email address I will send you a copy.

FWIW...

SV,

Interesting thought on how to fix. Not positive I could have done that in the aft cabin, as the PO had torn out about half of the head liner. Along with part is under the cabin trunk etc, so screws were not an option. In my V-berth, where I have a cored deck, that might have been an option, but opted to turn most of it that is flat, into a vinyl covered 3 or 4mm door skin plywood and screwed on. Much like I did to the head and aft cabin. Main salon, I just took off the unmatched vinyl, and replaced with the new color.

I only saw my one option at the time, which is more or less how a friend GF whom is an interior designer, has her own shop etc did his Peterson Islander 40.

Your option would work in flater area's where screws would work!

SunGypsy, there are other threads here and elsewhere about replacing headliners. Basically, you can't reglue the foam. The foam has broken down chemically into crumbly powder and it has to be replaced.
