Solimar Steering

I have the a Solimar 607 Series 3 steering system on my 1989 Jeanneau Voyage 37'. I am attempting to pull the steering wheel shaft & bearing from the pulpit in order to access the keyway located beneath it where there is looseness. Can anyone suggest a better method then fashioning a puller from a section of pipe with a bolt into the shaft thru a plate while heating the bearing with a hot air heat gun & cranking the bolt to pull?
