Furuno 1731 questions??

I just purchased a 1972 35 Coronado Center Cockpit. I am planning a minor overhaul with the paint and interior. I am also upgrading the electronics. I found someone selling a "New Condition" Furuno 1731 w/Dome and mounts for what sounds like a great price (under a $1000). I have searched high and low and I haven't been able to find anything in that price range. Is this a good deal? Are they better units? Thank you in advance..

Thumbs up

Product Detail - 1731

Link to Furuno, about this model.
FWIW, I have a 1715, and at least three friends have the similar 1623, and we all like them a lot.

If you call (or email) to Furuno USA, they are located in the Pacific NW (Camas, WA) and are very helpful folk to talk to.

Thank you for the quick response. Have you had any issues with the CRT? Is a LCD unit any better?

jrd22 will become famous soon enough
I much prefer the CRT if you have the space for it, although the new LCD's are very good now (maybe better in some ways). If you can power the unit up you should be able to check total hours on it (consult the manual for that model). IIRC the magnetron is good for about 3000 hrs. Good luck with it, Furuno makes the best radar as far as I'm concerned.

I am leaning against this unit. The unit itself was in great condition, but the size of the 24inch Dome and the size of the display unit was much larger than I expected. I wanted to mount the unit in the cockpit area but the depth of the unit would prevent a clean installation. Also, I was worried the dome would interfere with tacking or the jib. Any comments.
