Gooey / sticky issue

4 1/2 years ago, I bonded a small piece of treated wood to the hull, inside the bilge area. At that time I was using 3M 5200 & 4200 for different projects. Although I thought I used 5200, I may have used 4200 for this job.

There is rarely water in the bilge since she spends most of her time on the driveway. There has been small amounts of fresh water and saltwater at times, although not above this spot when sitting. No fuel contamination either. (outboard)

Yesterday I noticed the wood had become detached from the hull. Upon examination, I discovered, what ever stuff I used, had detached from the fiberglass hull and was fairly sticky/gooey. If you touched it, white goo would get on your finger and you would have to really rub, to get it off.

I can understand that maybe I didn't get the hull clean enough for the bond to hold but am wondering why this stuff is still gooey? (or it has become gooey?)

dont know the specifics, but if you used an inferior sealant could heat be an issue? if it is getting 100+ in the cabin on sunny days maybe its melting?

"why this stuff is still gooey?"
Since you don't know for sure which stuff you used, the point is moot. Could be defective stuff. Outdated stuff. Contaminated stuff.
I've seen 5200 release from thoroughly cleaned stainless steel in a way that really was memorable, but I've never seen one of the 3M products fail to set up and cure when properly applied. Or turn back into goo afterwardds.
Maybe whatever you used was not supposed to be used in damp places, like bilges.
