One of these would be much more stylish.

and a couple of these
Amazon.com: Lava Lite 14.5" Classic Lava Lamp - Pink Wax/Purple Liquid/Silver base & cap: Home Improvement

har t har har...

just thought the ease of the remote would be handy at night/dawn so as not to fumble around... ill hang the mirror ball from the boom in the cockpit as a beacon to draw them in. maybe i could get green and red lavas to use as bow lights...

That one is much cheaper than the one we use:
AQUA-SIGNAL Remote at West Marine

Although ours is waterproof and floats.

We use it to turn our cockpit light off/on.

I've been thinking about using those LED strip lights sold by sailorsams for the same purpose on my boat. I think they'd look a lot better. Certainly not as cheap though! I see no issue with what you're trying to do from a safety standpoint. That remote you're proposing appears to require a separate controller to be attached to the lights themselves, that may make it significantly more expensive.

Mick, I think the Zenith system is just a clone of the X-10 system, and that's just a remote. You need to plug the lights (or other device) into a "device controller" that the remote turns on/off. Not a dimable AC lamp controller, either. That's probably 120VAC only, unless you start hacking into it. $$$$

But if you wait until the day after Xmas...you know all those LED Xmas lights go on sale for maybe a buck a set, right? Some even with remote controls?

Another X-10 clone/source? Got me excited for a moment, but, the zenith model looks proprietary. ;( ( and yes.. it is only one part of the overall system. ) I do use X-10 to control my Christmas and other lights from my phone system using a program called "Mister House." I've been trying to figure out how to get it on the boat.. but the lack of shore power creates another set of challenges.

Regarding the Christmas Lights.. My experience with these incandescent sets is that they are very low quality and designed to last a season or two. Using LEDs ( and their lower voltage) probably lowers the compliance bar for wiring quality. Despite these potential shortcomings, it may be a good source of DIY parts.
