Does anyone know the best paint to use on a vinyl headliner?

mitiempo will become famous soon enough
There are paints designed to be used on vinyl. If you phone a few paint stores I am sure you will be directed to the correct product.

Painting vinyl can be tricky because not all paints will stick to it well. Prep work is important. Clean thoroughly and then wipe with acetone or TSP. Be careful, some detergents leave a film which can affect adhesion. Best case is to use a bonding primer and good latex, urethane, or oil-alkyd paint. The most effective bonding primer I am aware of is XIM Plastic & Vinyl primer. Go to their website ximbonder.com to find out where to get it.

I remember from my car-nut days that we would buy used car seats from a wrecker and repaint them to match using a special vinyl paint for that purpose. It seemed to stand up pretty well even with the constant sliding into and out of the seats.

It was a spray can type of paint, which may be problematic on the overhead, but was available at autoparts stores at the time.
