Inspection port install

Going to put an inspection port in the rear of the cockpit of my Nimble 20 so I can access at least the top gudgeons and also monitor how the mizzen mast base is looking (I've heard you can wear through whatever it's resting on).

My question is if anyone else has installed inspection ports, what sealant I should use... I was looking at a basic Ronstan 5" PNP97 port... but I can't figure out what the material is, so not sure if 5200 would melt or it not.

I hate always falling back on silicone sealant when it comes to plastics, and it sounds like some people have installed inspection ports using 5200, but if anyone has some specific experiences with it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

5200 is primarily an adhesive, and should not be used for simple sealant purposes.

Butyl tape, or DC 795, or Boat life/Sikaflex products would be appropriate, check the info on the plate material, some of these may not be compatible.

Bass,

According to RonstanUS, the material is "Impact resistant, U.V. stabilised Nylon"

Agree with the advice not to use 5200 -- overkill. Butyl tape would be my first choice for sealant.

mitiempo will become famous soon enough
I used Sikaflex 291 for an inspection port to access the fuel vent with no problems (a year later).

Don't use 5200 if you ever want to remove it - and eventually you will want to remove most all deck hardware. The 5200 will pull the gelcoat off the laminate.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, I ordered up some 3M 4000 which should do the trick and not mess with any types of plastics.
