Interior Painting, priming questions, and it's cold!

So we've stripped all the paint off the interior, down to the glass and wood. Only took 2 people 30 hours each for the main cabin on a 30 footer ;-)

Not looking for the prettiest job, but it needs to last a while at sea.

A few questions:

1) It's getting a little chilly around the Chesapeake Bay. Given enough time will the paint dry? We have a heater so could keep the cabin toasty for at least the first 8 hours or so, if not more.

2) Primer: Heard good things about Zeissners anti mildew paint and it's self priming. Is this a short cut or should I still use a primer like the 1-2-3 rustoleum before painting?

3) Zeissner has both interior and exterior paint that is self priming. Which one to use for a boat interior?
RustOleum.com
RustOleum.com

I presume exterior paint would be more resistant, but maybe it shouldn't be used because of toxins?

4) Sealing: Should we apply a sealer on top of the paint to make it more resistant, easier to clean and keep water out? Seen some lacquer's that look pretty good on a boat, and tend to even out uneven surfaces too.

Thank you!

this is a sealer/primer/stainblocker all in one, but i would add the caveat that i did not paint over it, and used it in 'out of sight' areas. under the settee, in the hanging closet etc. but it seemed to take well and has given me no issues since applying. KILZ ORIGINAL--any local hardware store.

I went with Valspar Duramax in a semi gloss white two coats

When it's time to paint the outside, you want a "no worries" paint that looks beautiful, lasts a long time and resists pesky environmental challenges like mold, mildew, algae and UV rays. Valspar® Duramax with Advanced Crosslinking Technology® is the ultimate safeguard for the exterior of your home. Self-priming, it goes on thick to save you time and money. And the rich finish makes small surface cracks and defects literally disappear.

And i have found the above to be fairly true

Below 50 deg painting is a bit of a crap shoot as even with heat the hull is cold

stantale, one other thing... in the vee, cabin stowage areas (bookshelves etc), and down the wall of the quarter b. i used fabric for wall covering to make it more cozy, if you go that route to prevent light from bleeding through, hit the glass w/a dark spray paint before applying the fabric--it will stop/at least lessen the amount of light poking through. good for the mornings (or hangovers) when you want to sleep in....

not quite finished out here, but you get the idea... not quite 'before' not quite 'after' but 'during.' its all buttoned up now, ill put the 'after' up tomorrow...

thanks for all the advice!

I think I'm going with bigpimpin' semi-gloss on top of the kilz primer stuff.

only one answer about the cold part though, so is it a yay or nay? I don't care if it takes along time (as in weeks) to dry, but I definitely don't want it to do it if it's all going to melt off in 6 months.

If the temperature drops below 50 degrees during the curing cycle, it's probably going to get screwed up. A lot depends on the actual temperature and humidity.... but lower temperatures are going to extend the time the paint takes to harden and cure properly. Anything below 50 is also risking problems with condensation on the painted surface causing chalking of the paint's finish.

If the temperatures are much below 50 degrees, you may have to wait an extra day or so to allow the paint to cure properly before applying another coat of paint over it. If you paint over the partially cured paint, you're going to run into serious problems relatively shortly, since adhesion will be a problem for both layers.

There are some more modern formulations of paint designed for colder climates that can be applied in temperatures as low as 35 degrees, but I don't believe Kilz is one of them.

I'd also recommend only applying the paint in the middle of the day, when the temps are at their highest, so that the paint has sufficient time to start curing before the temps drop too low. Heating the cabin may not help, because uneven temperatures may result in mixed states of cure for the different temperature regions.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Many years ago my daughter did a school science fair project on paint applications;

A lot of aluminum rectangles 2"x3" (I know because I cut them all), prep according to Rustoleum directions.
One set in refrigerator then painted (about 40deg)
One set in freezer then painted (about 20deg)
One set in oven then painted (about 100deg)

All lost or gained temp for about 20 mins at room temp until painted.

Let chips dry at room temp for a few days, then run through a rock tumbler.

Only the oven heated ones survived with minimal paint loss

I learned a lot from by daughters various science fair projects, but for paint; follow manufacturers directions.

I will be painting my hull interior this spring Kilz then semi-gloss after air temps are above 60deg F.
