temperature anomaly on Westerbeke W27A

We just had our purchase survey of a 1988 Sabre 34Mk2 CB. It went pretty well, but we discovered what seems to be a temperature anomaly on engine. The most forward cylinder read 175 F while the most aft cylinder read 225 F. The other two cylinders were intermediate. We believe that the temperatures should be more uniform; perhaps in the range of 185 +/- 5 F. Is anyone familiar with the normal temperature range on the Westerbeke W27A? An infrared thermometer pointing at injectors was used to measure temperatures; it was very consistent and did not depend on the exact location probed. Thanks
Pete

Was the engine idling, or under load? Diesels commonly have a pretty broad range of exhaust temps (I know, you were measuring at the head, not the exhaust) at idle. Operating temps frequently will even out quite a bit with a good 75-80 percent load on the engine. Removing and having the injectors test-popped might be a good idea. Varying injector popping pressures and spray patterns can make combustion (hence operating temps) range widely. A 5 degree F oper. temp. range at the head is probably expecting too much - most will range more than that, but no direct experience with your particular engine here.

All that being said - go simple and try your temp test under load first and see what you get.

Thanks. The reported test was conducted under load. We were motoring at approximately 1800 RPM.
