Can anyone identify this wood?

I just pulled this tiller off my '77 C&C sailboat, sanded, and coated it (no stain). I think it is some kind of mahogany, but am not sure.

Mahonany ...classified as a hardwood, grown in in tropical countries like Cuba, and only certian countries in South america. There are acually many sorts of Mahogany which is really only a generic name. One of the most precious will be the mahogany from honduras. Mahogany also has been growing in America since the late 1990's.

Philippine mahogany = lauan. Apparently "Philippine mahogany" is a bucket generic term these days with the real thing (lauan) having been clearcut so extensively it has been rare since the 90's.

Better get a lock and chain on that tiller.

There is a reason tillers are very often laminated ash and mahogany.

That looks like Honduran to me by the color and grain. About eight coats of varnish, sanded back till the grain pits are gone and then four more coats and it'll look like glass over fire....
