Outboard lifting is killing me!

Got a 8 Yamaha on an typical adjustable outboard bracket. I am not a weakling and in good health, but reaching way out to pull the outboard bracket up out of the water for storage is killing me. Does anyone else experience this? It requires more of an "upward" pull which is difficult when you are reaching 2-3 feet out over the transom. Is there a "pull bar" or any other tool made to make this easier? Thanks

I assume the engine is on your sailboat? I saw a picture of a neat way to do this. The owner fabricated a strap of stainless steel with a hook on one end that fit the dimensions of the lifting point on the engine. At the other end was a fitting that attached to a tackle arrangement that was in turn connected to the backstay. It worked so well his wife could do it. I''d est. the strap was 4" wide by 2'' long and 3/8" thick.

I recently bought a set of transom davits with the optional engine lift brackets. I also bought and installed an outboard motor harness. Together, they make lifting (and placing the outboard in either the transom holder or on the dinghy) a breeze.

Sailnet didn''t have the davits I wanted, so I got them from ''Defender''. I found the outboard harness on ebay for $5.00. ;^)

I don''t know the Oday, but I have a Pearson 365 Ketch and have created a snap on Block and Tackle system for the Mizzen boom (and there was a bracket with hole already there, so maybe previos ower had designed same thing). My suggestion of concept might be to use your boom if possible, if not maybe a halyard and create a guide off you stern stanchions. It helps to have the block and tackle system work at least 15 inches from your hull so things don''t get banged up. There are more expensive options, but hope this might trigger something to try.

I nade a block and tackle using awning pulleys you can get at any hardware store and some rope. I attached one end to the motor and the other to the stern railing. Now I just nudge the bracket handle up out of the lock notch and lift with the block and tackle. Much easier!!! Even my wife can lift the motor.

Yes. There is a pull bar available for just that purpose. But, if you''re having trouble tipping an 8-hp motor, I''d look to see if there isn’t excessive drag on the motor mount. It may be something as simple as greasing some fittings. If all seams well there, look around for one of these bars at a marine engine dealer. I''ve seen them used on bigger motors and don''t know if one can be found to fit a motor that small. Before you buy one, I''d suggest, if your handy, that perhaps you could make one that would be better suited for your particular situation.

I knew a sailor who drilled two holes in his motor mount and hooked the ends of an appropriately sized spring through the holes. The length of the spring was such that it was not completely relaxed, even when the motor was fully raised. The additional spring power helped lift the motor.

I am having a motor mount built special. My boat was designed for an inboard OMC saildrive..OMC need I say more about the quility of that motor? I have since removed that problem and for the time being I am going with a 9.9 Mercury outboard. Since my transon is so vertical it is almost impossible to tilt the motor and totally imposible while underway. because of this I have designed a high lift motor mount that lifts the motor to the top rail. It is based on an old camper jack system my Step Father used to load and unload his camp from the truck. I have added 2 knots of speed getting rid of the old saildrive tail and now prevented the outboard from dragging it''s prop.Lifting is a breeze I just turn a crank and up she comes.
