I''m reading Moitessier''s The Long Way. Wondering about self-steering. Has it been largely replaced by autopilots or is it still considered an essential back-up for long passages? How exactly does it work?

A self steering vain is not a backup system. It is the primary system with an autopilot held as a backup. Todays vains are strong and can hold a course many times even in light winds. The use the water it''s self as the power to hold a course and use the boats rudder to not just a little paddle to steer. You can find alot of data on vains at sites all over the net. look at this:
