Compass repair? Replace?

My Ritchie compass leaks, and appears to have small cracks in the globe. There are two repair shops on LI. Has anyone had one repaired? How much $? I see that new ones start around $200. They also come in black or white, with black, white or blue cards. Any preferences? Why?

I had mine rebuilt a few years ago by a guy in Egg Harbor Nj . I think It cost $65 and looks like a brand new compass. New fluid, lense, compensating magnets etc. and painted.

I was able to find someone to rebuild my compass 3 years ago. The lens was replaced and the oil topped off. Still looks good. I considered a replacement but I am glad that I kept the original. The Richie compass that I have is no longer available. I could have fit another one in the same spot but it was easier and cheaper to have the repair done.

I had two Ritchie Globemaster compasses completely rebuilt a couple years ago. The cost was about $200 each, but that was less than half the cost of new Globemasters. I used Andrews Compass Service in Mattapoisett, MA.



Compass on left has been re-built, compass on right has not been (yet) - it was the better of the two before the rebuilding.

You might also want to contact Ritchie. Some of the companies will offer generous deals on simply replacing it with an all-new one. Which may or may not interest you, but does come with a new warranty as well.

Capt Gil Porter repairs compasses here . he also adjusts them on your vessel . the cost is a lot less than buying a new one. i had the card with magnets replaced.
