Removeing fuel tank to clean!!!!

Hey there, i have a boat that went sank during huricane katrina, the previous owner told me that he had the tank cleaned, but there is alot of "funk" in the bottom of the tank that matches the Funk that clogged the fuel filter. I am going to pull the tank, and give it a good cleaning. Soap and water i hear will do the trick,,, any thoughts or suggestions???

And while the tank is out, is there any need to add any fittings to the tank being able to drill and clean now. I have fill hole, vent tube, line out with pick up tube, and return line and a fuel gage sending unit.. I am not sure if the fuel scrubber is realy needed but this might be a good time to add extra send and return for the fuel scrubber for future use. What size should i use, and should i get an in the tank pump for this, or use a external fuel pump??? Thanks for any help and suggestions

How old is the tank? If it is an older tank, you might consider replacing it rather than cleaning it. If you are determined to clean it, see if you can have the inside steam cleaned.

If you want to add a fuel polishing system to your boat, you will definitely want to have the additional pickup and return lines. Use an external fuel pump with a fairly high capacity, since fuel polishing works best if the fuel in the tank is quickly run through the filters. Also, the high volume helps in removing particulates from the tank. Maine Sail has a good article on this IIRC.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I just read this page, which although it is talking about tank replacement, has good info on tank gunk, tank fittings and polishing systems, might be worth a gander...
