Installing aluminium mast steps on steel mast

Just like the title states, I want to install steps on my steel mast, how do I isolate, and how do I fasten. Thanks

Seriously? You have a steel mast?

mitiempo 03-23-2011 10:36 PM

If you have a steel mast use stainless steps. Isolation would be less of an issue. A neighbor has a steel boat with steel mast (heavy, I know) and he welded steps on when he built the mast.

Man, that thing must be heavy. Pics?

Yes steel Masts! Very heavy 22 tons. It's like sailing a train, very slow to get going but once she does get going the boat sails herself.

Why not weld steel ones on? I know fire control aboard could be challenging but very doable. Weld on the way up, paint on the way down, nothing to it.

Ironworkwer, I just might do that, there is already a ladder welded on to the front of the mast going up to the spreaders, so I figured why not make go all the way. I just had a great deal on folding aluminium ones.

Too bad we are not close to each other, you could buy me the aluminum steps and I could weld on your steel ones.

Sounds like a good trade. Side note, my last sailboat was a newport 28, loved that boat, sailed like a champ.

Sutton Steel Sailboats

The sailboat pictured looks like a "Sutton". Any chance you have more info on Sutton?
