Running Rigging?

As spring approaches i'm getting more prepared for rigging our boat.

Had some questions about running rigging and whether there are some good books on design and basic setup. I've been restoring our old O'day 23' pop top and have never sailed her so I don't really have anything to go by when re-rigging her. Everything was tattered and or gone so i'll be doing it from scratch.

It's just a weekend sailer on the lakes so i'm not looking for anything really salty and stout. Is there alternatives to halyards and lines as far as sourcing from a hardware store/online vs. buying the expensive stuff? What have you folks done to just get out sailing? The rigging only needs to last the summer to get a feel for the boat. Then we'll know how we want to finish her and fit her out completely.

I'm really interested in something that will explain rigging and show some basic examples of similarly rigged boats like our 23 footer... Is there anything out there for this?

Any comments and suggestions are really appreciated!

You need at least a low cost sailboat type line like sta-set as anything they sell at a home depot type store is really weak and stretches massively

Places like Cajun trading will make a compleat kit or sell you a bit at a time at a very good price

I just decided to recycle some very good used wire-rope haylards i found from a friend to keep that cost down

I've bought line from Cajun before and was very happy with it. Much cheaper than the price you find in the mainstream catalogs. If you still have some time you may want to consider ebay. Often times companies will be selling an odd length of line to finish up a spool. I went this rout the last time and was able to color code all my running rigging. This makes it easier to teach non sailors by simply saying the name (ie. mainsheet) then the color. Makes it easier for them.

Even in light winds, the line loads generated by the sails exceeds the breaking strength of any rope you will get in a home improvement or hardware store. I'm afraid you'll have to get real line made for boating.

The heaviest line on your boat is 3/8 for the genoa sheets. The rest looks like they're 5/16 and under. You'll likely be able to rig the whole boat for less than it cost me for one spinnaker halyard and two spinnaker sheets.

Awesome thanks! Cajun looks very reasonable. Pretty amazing that standard home depot stuff can't handle the loads, good to know!

I did notice that with our original mast it had a wire halyard, our new mast was setup for a line. What are the benefits/drawbacks with both? I could make the changes now depending on what makes more sense.

Forget the wire... today's ropes are low stretch and much easier to handle.

A way to cut costs also is to shop at a marine consignment store. You can get used about everythinig you need and used rigging gears will work just fine. I'd be circumspect of used electronics.. One thing about geting rid of the wire hallyard. Check the sheave in the masthead to see if it will support rope. You may have to change it. The ones that support both have a concave rolling edge with a groove for wire. Strictly wire sheaes don't

Up to me, save your money and tie the halyard on. That's what I do, and it's no big deal. No heavy shackle to fly about and smack you in the head when you let go of it accidentally.

Here's how we tie ours on.. low profile, secure and cheap!!
