Water backing up galley drain

Hi Everyone -

When I get back to the dock, if I have put the rail in the water I'll find a small amount of water in the galley and head sinks. The thru-hull valves (ball valves) are closed. Any ideas where this water is coming from?

Thanks

Chances are the through hull valves leak by.... what sort of valve are they?

Ball valves. If they leak, they only leak in one direction as when they are closed the water is definitely not draining!

It's coming through your faucets because the water tank is elevated above them from heeling. Taste it. If it's salty I'm wrong.

That's the other possibility for sure... do you have a water tank on the opposite side of the boat?

could be...

..water that is in the drain hose above the valve. When you close the valve there will be water remaining in the hose up to the water line and when the boat heels, the water spills out into the sink. Maybe.

its water stuck in the drain at rest, i agree. i do have water tanks on the opposite side from the sink, but there is a foot pump on the faucet so I don't see how the water can 'fall' from the opposite tank 'up' the faucet

Sandy--

Go by your local harware store and pick up a pliable stopper and shove that in the drain when you close your thru-hull. Leakage solved. For the record, however, sailing on your ear with your rail in the soup isn't particularly efficient although it can be fun and will surely give the "girls" a thrill.

Actually the foot pump has intake and discharge check valves, that DO allow water to be pushed through the pump! So the water tank on the high side may very well be the culprit. Close the ball valve at the water tank and see if it happens again.

Tank Vent?

Do you have a fresh water tank vent that drains into the sink?
