I would be very suspect on the durability of this motor. I think you would be better off getting a used well known brand for less money. Also consider part availability.

Something like this is very tempting, but don't do it. A very wise man I worked for a number of years ago had a motto that that applies here: at best, you get what you pay for. What he meant is that as a general rule, moderate solutions tend to give you moderate value and really cheap solutions are too often no value at all. Sure, bargains that give you great value for less money do exist but they are very rare.

If I were in your shoes I would spend the money for a known quality unit from a well-known vendor. Personally I would choose a Honda or Tohatsu for their reliability and longevity, but I would have to investigate parts availability before making my decision.

My gut tells me that Siamese has the right idea about service and support.

I've decided that I'm not going to buy one, because I doubt that it would last an hour in salt water. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with them...

Less than half what the Honda air cooled 4 stroke costs. But I wouldn't risk it either I don't think. Even if the steering arm was on the correct side.

I seen many of these on ebay selling for new a little over $300 a couple years ago. I looked into getting one for an inflatable boat I had at the time. I wrote the seller and he said it can be used in saltwater. I never did get one though. Just go with one of these and be done... Tohatsu Outboard Motor 3.5hp 4-Stroke A lot more money but at least you know you getting a great motor and won't have to worry when its time to crank her up and head in.

I bought a 7 year old Honda 2HP longshaft, 4 stroke, air cooled for $450 from a dealer, with a 1 year warranty. Looked new except for a scuffed ($6) decal. Craigslist had rougher ones for $400. I'd spend the extra $100 for not having to premix oil and being from a trusted brand with parts availability well into the future.

And the tiller handle works the same way. Flip and spin for reverse. I guess it's one of those things you'd criticize on a knock-off but call "ingenious" on a Honda.

I just bought a Mercury 3.5hp 2 stroke off of eBay (for about $100 more than it was worth ). This is the version with the FWD and N transmission, so that's worth sumpthin'

The nice thing is that it is a 2 stroke (no engine oil to change), weighs 29 lbs. and will keep the bugs away! Bad thing is that I'll have to premix gas, and I'm sure that ethanol will bugger the carb...

I'll see when it gets here.
