Coffee drinkers opinions?

Hello everyone!
My name is Devin and I am a design student in Boston. Recently my mother brought to my attention her lack of space for a coffee maker when packing for a month long sailing trip with her boyfriend. This got me thinking about designing a coffee maker specific for boats. I was hoping to get some peoples opinions on this idea and also how you currently brew coffee while sailing? What kind of boat? Any problems you have with your current method or anything you would want improved on. Any information would be wonderful! Thanks guys!

Lots of personal preferences to consider. If you don't mind percolated coffee, that would seem a simple, easily powered, compact way to make fresh hot coffee. Little waste, no filters, could use several different heat sources to warm water.

I use a Melitta manual cone coffee maker on the boat. Boil water pour it through the cone filter. Pour the hot coffee into a thermos bottle to keep hot.
Melitta Cone Filter Coffeemaker 10 Cup, 1-Count: Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food
It's simple, inexpensive, doesn't take much space, and makes pretty good coffee.

It's all about the french press on the boat. Easy to use, quick to clean, and no filters.

Great info so far guys thanks! So is anyone apposed to time/fuel use of boiling the water on the stove? Is there any issues with these sytems you have encountered? What would your ideal method be (even if its not totally realistic)?
Degree, how does the Keurig work for you? I interned at the firm that designed them. I suggested the Mini plus for my mums trip but she didn't have room for the machine and K-cups though.

Stovetop espresso pots works best for us. We use Bialeti Moka Express (aluminum). Simple, quick and very efficient. Coffee is ready in minutes and it comes out consistently good each and every time. Just make sure to get a larger size because the size of the pot is measured in espresso cups. The only drawback is that if you want to make another pot quickly, you have to wait a few minutes before it cools down (hence another reason for a larger pot in the first place).

k-cups don't seem like a good concept for the boat. The used and unused cups will take up a lot of space compared to other methods.

Also, the keurig machine or standard coffee maker take a lot of power for a boat that is not attached to shore power. That could be a real drain on your batteries.

For the french press, if we are in port, we can boil water in the microwave. The propane stove can work for at anchor or underway. There are also smaller units that are specifically made for use underway that run on the green propane canisters that can boil water.

Some thing like a keurig that runs on propane canisters and uses mesh, reusable filter might find a good market on sailboats.

Stove-top espresso maker (a.k.a., Moka pot)
