small stove knowledge

I am mostly a day sailor but have been contemplating doing some camping out on the water. My boat, a Santanna 20, has absolutely zero in the way of accomodations. I don't plan on being out longer than a night or so but I do like coffee in the morning and a french press has been decided on the way to go. I also might get motivated and heat up a can of soup, who knows how crazy I might get. So anyway a small one burner stove is needed. I know next to nothing about stoves. I know some people go with butane and other go with liquid alchohol for there small boats. I know there are a lot of different opinions on what is the best.

My two questions are. What is the best fuel source, and which is the best stove. When i say best, I mean best for the money.

I would get a backpacking stove like a Jet Boil.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Butane is best for heat/cooking, 10K BTU's vs 3-5K BTU for alcohol.

Alcohol evaporates easily, can have an almost invisible flame and is expensive.

Butane cans are sealed and can be stored a long time.

Butane stoves come w/ a carry case and are $25-$40! I love mine and cooking is fast. A pressure cooker would be the most versatile pan to have w/ either fuel.

If its only going to be occasional use, go with a Kenyon butane stove. Only $32, but the 7.8 oz cartridge is $5. For more use, I would go with a Origo/Cookmate alcohol stove. Stove will be $150-200 but a gallon of alcohol is only $12 or so in the hardware store.

Asian markets have the Butane cans for around $1.50

Asian markets are abundant in most places.

Since your using gas for your outboard most likely.. Coleman makes single burner backpacking stoves or the good old standard 2 burner pump the tank with air type. At least the tank is small and easy to store outdoors where fumes can't get in the boat.

Where are they sold for $32. I did a quick google search and they were closer to $50

I'm leaning toward one of these. Butane (lighter than air or propane)

No Butane is not, air has a density of 1.225 g/l @ 15°C. and Standard Atmospheric Pressure while butane is 2.52 g/l. Butane is more than twice as heavy as air! got the info from Answers.com - Is butane lighter than air
also
General Chemistry Online: FAQ: Gases: How do I predict whether a gas is heavier or lighter than air?

it is not what you think it is.

This being said, i have used this kind of cook stove Amazon.com: GAS ONE Portable Gas Stove UL and CSA List / With Free Case: Sports & Outdoors for years in a truck and will use it in the boat. but know it is not Lighter then Air.
