mooring pickup tune up

I have a pickup with fiberglass mast that the fiberglass is deteriorating. The woman "who must be obeyed" is getting splinters. Not good.

Any idea? Varnish maybe?

Thanks for any ideas!

Brian

Buy a new fiberglass rod at Home Depot -- at my local HD we'd have choice of yellow or red both with white reflective bands. Reuse the float and weight. Epoxy the rod into the weight.

I would get a new rod. You could wrap the entire rod in riggers tape in the meantime, but it wouldn't last long.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Not sure I'd rely on epoxy alone. Usually held in with a cotter pin. Just use the weight as a jig and drill a hole through the rod. Did that once when the rod split at the bottom. Just shortened it a bit and used it for five more years.

You can use shroud protectors, the white plastic things with the split in them, or buy a UV resistant pick up buoy from Hamilton Marine or just use a boat hook, the aluminum never splinters...

Another tack would be to sand the rod lightly with fine paper then give it several coats of polyurathane.
Keeps the splinters from happening.
Another idea is to get your Admiral some sailing gloves.

SWMBO should drive. You should wear gloves.

Just tell her that the splinters keep it from slipping through he fingers. That should solve all your problems

Or you could give it a light coat of epoxy.
