I think I'd put some hardy tape around the names and numbers to limit the damage to the surrounding area as you try to sand the old off. You may need to replace it a time or two as you cannot help but abrade it along the way.
If you wet sand starting with say 220 or 320 and work your way up to 600 as the remaining paint thins out you may not have a big job of buffing it back somehow. But ghosting is going to be an issue, I suspect, esp with that colour. You may need to put another name in the same area to 'hide' it.
