Barient Winch - How Bad Is It ?

The drum on a Barient Model 21 self-tailing two-speed jib sheet winch on a '89 O'Day 302 wiggles freely nearly 1/8 inch at the top when not in use. This weekend, we confirmed the mounting bolts underneath are still tight. As the second owner, I do not believe the winch has been disassembled or seviced since new.

My best guess is either the roller bearings have failed, or the bearing surface inside the drum has been scored and worn away for lack of service (grease).

Has my lack of maintenance cost me $1,000 - or should we expect other issues when it comes apart ?

And what are the chances of finding repair parts ?

Looks like we have to go down under for spares. I too have a boatload of Barients and while they work fine today they are 33 years old and counting.

Don't give up on them without first taking them apart and examining them. Mine growled horribly when I bought the boat, but dissassembly, cleaning and lubrication fixed them up. Perhaps new bearings will do the job in your case.

I had this problem on my newly purchased Ericson at the time on some 27s and found that the inside of the drum that had been anodized had worn from the SS bearings and likely a lack of maint. Only new drums would fix the problem. Replaced with Harkens.

I recently bought some fine barient 21's for $150 each on ebay and spent the savings on sails.

I also tried to purchase used replacements but they had the same issue. The seller was very difficult to work with. He claimed the winches were fine until I showed him the insides of the drums.
