shafted?

I am interested in putting on a new prop but there in not enough clearence from the rudder unless I shorten the drive shaft. My one inch diam shaft runs three feet from the strut which could allow for me to shorten itby at least 2 inches.

The yard said that they would remove the shaft but will not cut it. They say it would have to be shipped out for cutting. In talking to some of my on the hard neighbors who have new props that are close but fitting, two said that they just cut the shaft and drilled new pin holes to make them fit. Both report no ill effects and are very happy with the result.

Has anyone else done this and are still satisfied or are my neighbors just lucky that their efforts did not backfire on them?

From what you describe cutting the shaft should have no ill effects but pictures would help. I would imagine the outboard end of the shaft is tapered and should be a proper match to your prop, and trust you have confirmed that. That means you would have to shorten the inboard end so be sure to bring the coupling to the machine shop so keways can be cut to match and they can be tested for a good fit. Hope this helps.

Assuming you meant to type 3 inches? Practically you'll need to cut the coupling end, as already mentioned. Cutting and re-machining the taper end is much more work. As long as there's no interference or contact of any part of the prop at the strut you should be fine - as long as the 2" gain is adequate.

That is why I suggested bringing the coupling in to the machine shop!
