Physical Bell or a sounding device?

Just a quick one

I notice that the regs state that any vessels 39' and above require a bell

Is this an actual Bell or can it be circumvented?

If it is a bell, what do other people use and where do they store it?

We use this from west marine. (not that we are required to have one but we needed it for the denaming/renaming ceremony)

It has two brackets. One you mount somewhere on deck, the other down in the cabin. The bell stays in the cabin unless you need it for fog, then you bring it out.

Yes, you need a bell and just keep it below until it's needed in fog. We actually carry two. Why? Because the wife is nuts about safety and insists we have two of everything.
