Recommendations for horizontal anchor windlass
I'm looking for input in selecting a replacement windlass (the old one died last summer and i hauled 100' of chain by hand). Old windlass is removed, deck is patched and reglassed, and i just need to order the replacement. My boat is a Pacific Seacraft 34, the pad for the windlass is in line with dual anchor rollers. Fwiw: 1) the previous windlass was a vertical installation and the motor and exposed components gradually corroded from hanging over the damp chain and rode; 2) primary anchor is a 35 # CQR on 100 ft of 3/8 chain w/ 150 ft 5/8" nylon, secondary is a 22 # Bruce on 30 ft of 3/8 chain w/ 150 ft of 5/8" nylon; 3) generally we do weekend sailing between Casco Bay and Penobscot Bay, anchorages tend to be 15 to 20 foot; 4) I've already decided it's going to be a horizontal on deck installation.
What I'm really looking for is 1st hand experience with construction quality, performance, reliability, manufacturer support, and any pro's or con's.
The models I'm currently considering are the Lewmar H2 or H3, or the Lofrans Cayman. All would be 12 volts, capstan to port and chain/rode gyspy to stbd.
thanks, CharlyA
