Epoxy on Non-Epoxy???

What is your opinion of using epoxy glass systems (such as West Systems) on non-epoxy hulls? Specifically, I am considering building a chain locker into the bow of my ''82 USYacht 25. I''ve never had much luck working with vinylester resin, but have had good results with West Systems on smaller projects.

Epoxy on Non-Epoxy???

The theory is that a large, strong, and stiff section of epoxy, like the bulkhead for your chain locker, set into a large, strong and bendy stretch of fiberglass, like a typical bow section, will cause problems with either hard spots in the hull or eventual cracking and delamination due to the different materials'' properties. Epoxy is quite brittle, compared to fiberglass, and will crack more easily than fiberglass when flexed. That''s the theory. Of course people fill nicks in fiberglass with epoxy all the time, but this is not a nick you''re filling in.
