Hi Steve,

2 years ago I was trying to do the same thing you are, in Tampa; find a basis diesel course to help me and my wife learn to maintain our engine, troubleshoot and do minor repairs. It was difficult. I called trade schools, marine stores, etc and most do not offer marine diesel courses and the ones that do are very expensive, generally geared to teach certified mechanics. I even called the engine company to no avail.

I was finally successful by calling local marine diesel companies that "repower" boats. Many of these companies have learned that there is a real marketing advantage in offering these courses.

Even though I could not find a course for my engine (Perkins), Mastery Engine company in ST. Pete has a one day course for the Yanmar. I attended the one day course for $150.00. It was excellent. I learned a lot and the teacher was a nationally recognized marine expert. It really didn''t matter that my engine was a different make. Diesels are diesels.

So I would recommend you start by calling this type of company.

Good luck.

Tony

Tony, I happened to read your posting, and thanks. I am also in Tampa and was starting to think about a diesel course. I also have the Perkins (4-108). I might call Mastery and do the same thing.....

Glad my information was timely. Ask to speak to Suzie in the parts department. She sets up the classes. By the way, Chuck Hosick, is the teacher. He is a world famous sailor and you can read his tech articles in the reference section of the Boat/US webpage.

Darn, wish I was getting paid for all this free advertising. Tell Suzie I said hi.
