Mainsheet-Line Cover Separated from Core

OK so how do I fix this (see image)? It's a long story how this happened but now the cover is 12" shorter than the core. I've tried laying the line out and pulling on the cover. I've tried pushing the cover from the other end of the line up to the short end. This is as far as I could get.

I would just cut it but this line is JUST the right length. Or was. Thanks

Don't think there's anything you can do other than just keep working the cover along, eventually it will get there.

Tie the other end to a tree or other fixed object, stretch the line out and haul on the free end. The core will be pulled back into the cover. If you are not strong enough to fully pull the core back in, make a rolling hitch out of smaller line near the free end and attach that to the towing eye on your car back up a tad to tension the line and than back up a tad more and the core will retract. Then do a proper wipping.

FWIW...

Thanks, will give it a try. The car method sounds fun.

Have you trying "milking" the cover? Tie the good off, and work the cover down towards the other end.

I have tried this, it helped a little but I'm having trouble making up the last 12" this way.

Milk it some more. Use gloves, and eat your wheaties. It'll go back in. Then burn the cover to the core, or give it a whipping that locks the cover to the core.

Yep - Dacron is hard, but not impossible, to milk.

Jackdale is correct, you have to milk it! That starts from the other end where you tie it to something and begin the process. It needs to be milked the entire lenght of the line. Use gloves and really work the line. Your gloves will get hot if you are working hard enough.

What is that taped tail just coming out of the cover? It almost looks like the core was eye-spliced and then taped and cut. What is the long story you haven't told us?
