My Hurth is supposed to....

go in gear when the lever is moved to fwd or rev, right? Well today it did not.. was in fwd when the engine was started after short sail in light air. I put it neutral, the rev. then fwd, raced engine it "caught" then it was OK.... Y'all know that "feeling" one gets in the pit of the stomach? ck the fluid. added a little. It's been ok since that one time this afternoon. We motored over to curtains wharf for dinner )about a half hour motor one way fwd and rev worked as always when entering the slip too. Soooo I'm a bit concerned now

I will ck the cables.. but I don't think it's them.

Oh. it's a universal 5416, Edson wheel and ped.

Our Hurth has done similar things from time to time... seemingly mostly when cold. In between it seems fine.

I wonder, about these transmissions as they are called.. pretty simple compared to a typical 5 speed in a car or truck right? Do boat transmissions have a clutch of some sort? and it engages at a certain rpm? I read allot.. syncros, rings and things inside the case make it all happen right?

Did some checking today.. shift cable does move the shifter arm fully. When it's put in gear the trans now starts the shaft turning within a fraction of a second. So I guess I'm ok for now. But this leads me to ask when does one know it's time to rebuild a trans?

When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid? It's usually very dark when it comes out, per one of those links, so you really can't tell too much, however, if you sift the old fluid through a strainer, you'll see if there are any "particles" and if so how big they are.

Basically, these things last forever and are pretty robust.

Since you've checked it out as you've just reported, and slippage would first be suspect in the cable.

Sleep more, worry less --- I know, easy for me to say!

An ignorant question from a trailer sailor with an outboard.

Are these types of transmissions similar to auto/truck "automatic" trannys? Fluid pump, filter, bands, plates etc? What type of fluid do they use? What do they use for cooling? Or are they more like a "standard" transmission?

I know on auto/truck automatics fluids should be changed before they get very dirty and they shouldn't be changed if they are very dirty. Many times the new fluid will finish off an old transmission.

One "miracle in a can" is Trans-X. It can soften up harden seals that are leaking (and loosing pressure) and get the trans working again. Good product for cars, don't have a clue about these boat trannys.

It can not hurt to change the fluid. It will not damage a trans to change the fluid, even if it is dirty. I personally use synthetic fluid in my engine & trans. Do not add rebuild in a can. when it's done it's done. Check you cables & change the fluid it can't hurt. 35 years certified auto tech.
