Hardware to attach Starboard to pedestal guard

Greetings,

I'm trying to talk myself out of a $$NavPod$$ to save money. The idea is to mount my new Raymarine A70 to a 1/2" Starboard mounting plate, and somehow mount this Starboard to the underside of the angled portion of my pedestal guard. I suppose top or bottom really doesn't matter from a hardware perspective.

I can rout two channels / depressions to align the Starboard for the 1" tubes on the pedestal guard, then I just need a way to attach the Starboard to the tubes. Is the best bet to simply drill and tap the tubing, then use a washer and machine screw? Or is there some kind of hardware piece that lends itself to this job.

I haven't really mounted anything to these tubes before, so haven't seen many things I could model after. Maybe someone with a big Navpod can describe how they are attached and it can be replicated for this job?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thank you,
Chris

Lightbulb one suggestion

Just 'cause you have a CS Yacht...

Here is a "mid Production" picture of the holder I built for a chart plotter for our boat. I bought the ss U bolts and other hardware from McMaster Carr. This was taken before I added a gusset underneath the angle and painted it gloss white to match the pedestal. The red colored fiberglass L section was from McMaster Carr also.

Certainly Not the only solution or maybe the best, but those commercially-made instrument holders cost many hundred $.

I couldn't agree more. They are insanely expensive for 8-10 layers of cloth, some resin, and a gelcoat in the mold job. The other thing I really don't like is how deep they are - especially the smaller (ST-60 size) instrument housings.

With the design I'm fiddling with the chartplotter fits in between the posts and the plotter's backside is nearly touching the angled part of the guard. Much more open than a 6" deep housing. In a bigger boat I wouldn't care, but my cockpit is really tiny as it's designed for a tiller, so big things just don't feel right.

Gotta love the CS Yachts. I never would have been as big a fan of them had I not gone through this refit - they are incredibly well built, and nothing but magic to sail. But yeah, I'm admittedly and happily biased!

Thanks for the tips...

-Chris
