Honda 2000i or Companion

Getting ready to buy a Honda generator as a backup battery charger and in lieu of an inverter for AC power. I was reading a post somewhere that the 2000 Companion has a 30 amp outlet which would allow me to connect the generator directly to my shore power inlet and use the outlets on the boat hence avoiding running an extension cord to the microwave, TV, etc as I assume would be necessary with the 2000i. Does anyone know anything about this? I trust you folks more than I do a random post. All help is appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

You can plug any generator into the shorepower inlet - with some you will need a 15 amp to 30 amp adaptor.

The new Hondas do have a 30 amp outlet. On my older one I use a short extension cord and a 15/30 amp adapter to plug into my system. That way you've got ac like being plugged into shorepower.

I'm doing the same thing Mike, best reference I could find was that in the operators manual on page 31 when used for parallel operation you plug the appliance into the 30 amp outlet. Not exactly clear but supports the supposition that you can use a short cable with 30 amp plugs instead of an adapter.

I'm considering the tri-fuel Honda 2000. Anybody have any experience with it? I have locker space for an additional propane tank and I like the idea of not having gasoline in the cokpit locker.

(they wont let me post the link to the outfit that modifies and sells them since I'm too new a member)

Interesting...for sure but I would think that most people would carry gas anyway for their skiff outboard.

Why is it that all the cool stuff is always "Not for sale in California". I swear, it's like living on a different freakin' planet.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'll go with the regular 2000I IF I can find someone to sell me one. The online ones are not "California approved". Sigh

I have the tri-fuel adaptor for my Honda 2000. It adds to the width of the generator but otherwise it works very well. With my 9000 BTU air conditioner, it uses about one pound of propane per hour of use. I don't worry about keeping it below when not in use because there is no residual fuel.
