Question Painting on hypalon

Does it work? I tried MDR inflatable boat paint, and it peeled off within minutes of hitting the water. Yes, I did read the directions, no I did not have their special cleaner. I used rubbing alcohol on one side and a clean cloth on the other...didnt seem to make a difference.

Would i be better off just getting placards and vinyl letters?

I stencil the cert numbers on my dink with a Sharpie brand marker, they write on anything and last about a year between touch ups.

I bought a spray can some stuff from the local auto parts store that was for flexible surfaces. Used it with a stencil to put mu numbers on my Achilles and so far (2 years) its working, though I don't think it would take too much abrasion to rub it off. Didn't do anything special about preparation.

I used a Sharpie; faded too fast for my likes. Perhaps it depends on the sun, whether the boat is on davits, and personal tolerance.

So I traced it with black latex paint (Painter's Choise, HD) and it's been fine for 2 years. I did prep it with a Scotch Brite pad and TSP.

Yup, cleaned the heck out of it, as above. Some pealing, though it has slowed...

"peeled off within minutes"

I'd expect hypalon and pvc to need different paints, or cleaners and primers. The vinyl letters stick pretty well on clean surfaces, even better if you have the matching adhesive for whatever the boat is made of.

Sharpies might be convenient but they are not permanent, the ink is soluble with alcohol and easily removed unless it migrates (bleeds) into the plastic.

Did MDR have any comment on why their paint let go?

dinghy registration

I have been told, by the locals in the know, that placards are no longer acceptable for dinghy or boat registration, the numbers and sticker must be affixed directly to the boat. Has anyone else heard this?

thanks,
