shaft\coupling tolerance

I am replacing the propshaft coupling on my v drive. The propshaft is not a standard size and I need to have the coupler machined to a very slightly larger bore size. What should the tolerance between the propshaft and coupler bore be within?

Connection between the shaft and coupling is usually a taper.

Fairly certain this is not tapered. nonsuch 30 westerbeke 27 V drive

I believe it is a press fit.

It should be a light press fit if this is a straight coupling. It should NOT just slide over the shaft easily.. This fit is usually fitted by hand by the machine shop. I would suggest using a "split" coupling then the fit is not quite as critical but it should still be pretty snug on the shaft.

A properly sized taper lock coupling should not present any difficulties . The taper lock bore is designed to tighten on the shaft as the taper is driven into the coupling via grub screws. Some systems also use a key to deliver the drive but that must be machined into the shaft.
