Mainsheet attachment on a Kenner

I was sailing on a Kenner Privateer 26 (1970) and took this picture of the main-sheet arrangement.

As you can see it it attached to the tiller.
There is a strong padeye on the deck behind the tiller.

Can you imagine any reason why it is rigged this way?

No. The padeye looks like a better location.

No and I can't imagine why the backstay chainplate is mounted that way either.

here's a possible reason ... It looks as thou if it were attached to the pad eye you would not be able to lift the tiller up out of the way to the vertical position. What is the blue/red fleck line?

The blue and red fleck lines are just dock lines not coiled up.

I'll be that if it were attached to the deck padeye that the cam cleat would not properly clear the tiller post. So it would really interfere with trimming the main. However, it lloks to me like a couple of shackles or toggles would raise the cam cleat well clear of the rudder post.
