hand pump

Anyone have a recommendation for a hand pump. I would like one for pumping out bilges and dingys etc.

They have only one model at west marine and it is really junky.

Jabsco makes a nice, long lived, but pricey, hand pump. I've had mine for 28 years and it still works like a champ.

An empty plastic coffee container such as a three pound Maxwell House container, with a handle and the side properly notched for dipping, makes a better dinghy bailer. Use a little spray paint on it if you don't want folks to think you drink that stuff.

It depends on how much water you have to move. I have a cheap plastic "Navy" pump - like the defender design - that I use for slurping up a few gallons here & there into a bucket. It has worked well for several years now.

For larger volumes and for a portable emergency pump I mounted a Whale gusher 25 double action aluminium pump on a board with a handhold cut in it. I made up a 4' stainless tubing handle so it can be pumped standing up on the board which holds everything in place. If you put well thought out hoses on it you can move it to where you need it, stand on it and pump very easily due to the long -"stand up" handle.

One of the Beckson Thirsty Mate pumps is good choice. Half the price and has a much larger hose and pump piston so will move much more water. The Jabsco listed is better for oil and fuel applications.

True. I leave a WM model in the dinghy for those times when it rains overnight. It is junky and would never be stolen.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

PAR(now Jabsco, I think) made a really nice brass one, years back I still have mine and it works like a charm, even on fluid other than water. about 12" long, small diameter in and out though...
