Night Vision Monoculars

Anyone have experience with night vision monoculars such as the ATN Night Storm 1 - useful for spotting the unlighted remnants of oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico? On a clear, moonlit night I've spotted three simultaneously and wondered about darker nights. No radar on board.

I have a friend that develops this kind of stuff for firefighters. He has one that you wear on your head with a little display in front of one eye. I put it on and I could see him in what appeared to be total darkness. I could also see his footprints on the lawn several minutes after he walked by, because they were warmer than the surrounding grass. Amazing stuff!

You have to know that "night vision" does not work in total darkness. It works by amplifying available light. IE will not work in a cave unless you supply it with some light such as a IR light. Thermal on the other hand will work in total darkness. BTW I dealt with NV sales and also have almost 700 flight hours with NVG's I would steer away from ATN. They are a front company that uses Russian electrics in American or other tubes. If you buy something I would get a Aurora Tactical :: Night Vision Goggles

You want something that you can mount on your head so your hands are free and uses AA batteries.

Gen 2 are fine, Try to get a FOM of no lower then 1250 and 1250 being the minimum of the range and as high as you are able (FOM is Figure of Merit think performance) Ask for Ron and tell them Jerry sent you.

Jerry

PS no I do not work for them, never did but I dealt with them.
